Transportation is a key issue for the public. Presented in partnership by the SFU City Program and the City of Surrey, Transportation Talks is an annual ‘citizen academy’ program. It tackles hot topic urban issues through a comprehensive introduction to the transportation system in the Lower Mainland, with a strong focus on Surrey.

What's Transportation Talks About?

Kicking off each year in September, this 9-week program explores how transportation shapes our city. Take a look at the 2018 Transportation Talks course outline.

This program is a chance for residents to connect directly with transportation professionals to hear how concepts of community, walkability, accessibility, mobility, safety and more impact how transportation is planned.

Its goal is to help develop citizens who are informed and engaged in Surrey’s transportation system. Participants learn about the challenges, strategies and opportunities of City transportation planning and the need to balance the push and pull in civic decision-making.

We also explore how our system got to where it is today, what agencies play a role in its operation and development, and how involved citizens can play a role in its future.

Key course elements include:

  • A series of weekly guest lectures;
  • A tour of the city to gain a practical, visual impact of transportation decisions; and
  • An opportunity to apply learnings in designing solutions to a local transportation issue and, with help from classmates, present these ideas to program leaders.

Program Speakers

Transportation Talks features a series of guest speakers that include policy and decision makers, planners, and engineers from city and regional governments, academia, private industry and the regional transit agency.

Sharing their knowledge, technical expertise and professional passion, speakers provide insights and experience from past projects and future challenges.
