24 Avenue Widening: 161A Street to 168 Street

Project Description

The City is widening and providing improvements to the 24 Avenue corridor between 161A and 168 Street.

The upgrades will include:

  • additional traffic lanes
  • sidewalks
  • cycle lanes
  • completion of multi-use pathways with lighting
  • intersection enhancements and new traffic signals
  • drainage works and new sanitary sewer

What Will this Project Achieve?

This project is part of a multi-phase widening and multi-modal infrastructure program to support growth in the rapidly developing Grandview Heights area. It will help to relieve traffic congestion and provide an improved corridor connection for all modes of travel, while accounting for current and future development in the adjacent Neighbourhood Concept Plans.

Work includes: 161A to 165 Street

  • widening from two lanes to a four lane, median-separated arterial road to support current and future traffic volumes
  • completion of the multi-use pathways – with lighting – to support both pedestrians and cyclists, improve visibility and create a more friendly environment
  • installation of on-road cycle lanes in both directions, supporting cyclists
  • a new traffic signal at 164 Street/Oak Meadows Drive (full movement signalized intersection), improving access to the local neighbourhood
  • a new pedestrian crosswalk at 163 Street with overhead flashing lights to connect the Morgan Heights and Sunnyside Heights neighbourhoods with the Grandview Ridge Trail and Oak Meadows Park
  • improved bus stops at 161A Street and 164 Street

Work includes: 165 to 168 Street

  • widening to an interim two lane road, with two-way left turn lane in the centre to improve traffic operations. Ultimately, this section will be widened to four lanes as development is completed
  • installation of one-way on-road cycle lanes in both directions and raised sidewalks for pedestrians
  • a new pedestrian crossing at 166 Street for improved pedestrian safety, which will ultimately become a full movement signalized intersection when development is completed in this area
