Can you spare up to 10 hours a month? Do you want to learn more about City politics and make an impact on your community? If so, consider applying to join a committee, commission, or board.

In Surrey, several committees, commissions and boards advise Council and City staff on topics that impact residents. Many of these committees are made up of volunteers who are recommended by City staff and appointed by Surrey City Council.

The application period for select committees, commissions and boards for the 2020 term is now open. We will be accepting volunteer applications until November 4, 2019. We also welcome applications all year-round for applicable vacancies.

Please review the list of volunteer committee vacancies below before applying. Note that not all Committees have vacancies.

Current Vacancies

We are currently seeking volunteers to fill vacant terms on the following committees:

Social Equity and Diversity Committee (3 positions available)

  • One (1) representative for persons with disabilities;

  • One (1) volunteer who is an Indigenous person; and

  • One (1) representative of the LGBTQ+ community.

Board of Variance (3 Positions Available)

Surrey Heritage Advisory Commission (3 Positions Available)

Surrey Public Library Board (8 Positions Available)

Parks, Recreation & Culture Committee (3 Positions Available)

Ethics Commissioner Selection Committee

How to Apply for a Committee, Commission or Board

Application Criteria

  • Applicants must not be employees of the City of Surrey
  • Applicants must live in the City of Surrey
  • Applicants should have experience or expertise that relates to the committee they are applying for
  • Applicants should be able to serve for the full term of the appointment (about 1-3 years)

A balanced committee or board has members with a variety of personal, education, business, and community involvement backgrounds. We welcome applicants of all ages, genders, neighbourhoods, racial origins, income levels, and sexual orientations to apply.

Time Commitment

Committee members are expected to attend monthly meetings and review related documents beforehand. This can equal anywhere from 2 to 10 hours per month. Time requirements vary among the committees.

In general, most committees meet 6 to 10 times per year, in the afternoon or evening. View the 2019 meeting schedule of the committee you are thinking about joining to learn more about what’s involved.


These are volunteer positions. Successful candidates serve without compensation.

Joining a committee, commission or board is not equal to – and does not lead to – employment at the City of Surrey.

Application Process

  1. Read the descriptions of the Committees, Commissions and Boards to identify which one(s) interest you.
  2. Prepare an application package that includes:
    • a letter expressing your interest in serving on the Committee, Commission or Board
    • a resume that describes your business, educational, and other volunteer or community experience
    • your contact information, including your street address
  3. Ensure that your application clearly indicates how you meet the criteria for the position you are applying for.

Submit your application via email to or drop a hard copy off in person to the City Clerk at City Hall.

The deadline to apply for a 2020 term is November 4, 2019.

Selection Process

Applications are received by staff. Council reviews the applications and appoints members to the committees, commissions and boards. Note that copies of all applications will be made available to Surrey City Council, city staff and the Surrey Public Library Board for the sole purpose of making appointments and communicating with the committees, commissions and boards.

Your information is collected under the authority of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act for this purpose and for contacting appointed persons with information regarding meetings.

All appointments are made by Surrey City Council in December, with terms starting in January.

All applicants will receive a letter from Legislative Services once the appointments have been made.
